Evolve: Neighbourhood Regeneration Through Partnership

Swanning around on the water!
12 August 2009
A rare species has appeared on a Merseyside canal - a flock of swan pedaloes.
The four swan-shaped vessels are now out and about on the Leeds Liverpool Canal in Bootle at weekends in August, offering free pleasure trips to local people.
One of the swans has been sponsored by Evolve, the neighbourhood regeneration partnership based in Bootle's Queens Bedford housing market renewal area.
Paula Thompson, Neighbourhood Investment Manager at Evolve, said: "We were delighted to 'get on board' as it were - it's a great idea to offer the swan trips, as well as the other activities going on down here at the canal side - and it just shows what great potential there is to use the water for recreational purposes. Projects like this all add to the sense of vibrancy in the area and within the local community."

The swan pedaloes are part of the Art for Places programme, currently being delivered in the South Sefton area. It includes watersports activities, exciting community arts projects and a major new public art commission for the area.
Art for Places is part of the Arts Council's North West region-wide programme and aims to share the vision, values and practicalities of using the arts to support sustainable regeneration across Housing Market Renewal areas and inspire others to use creativity as a regeneration tool.
It is delivered through a partnership of local housing associations, including plus dane group, NewHeartlands the housing market renewal pathfinder on Merseyside, and the Arts Council England North West.
