Centre Stage for Local Issues

15 May 2007

Evolve Neighbourhood Regeneration is giving centre stage to issues including drugs and alcohol, teenage pregnancy, anti-social behaviour and safer communities in a series of drama workshops with local youngsters.

The regeneration partnership has engaged Merseyside-based drama company All Talk Productions to perform two plays, 'Choices' and 'The Street', to young audiences at community centres. Each performance is followed with an interactive workshop exploring the issues raised through the drama.

'Choices' follows two characters, played by actors Joseph Shipman and Liz Brittles, through the dangers of drugs and alcohol and looks at how making the wrong choices impacts on their lives.

'The Street' examines a range of problems faced by a group of neighbours, including a teenage girl dealing with pregnancy, a heroin addict facing eviction from her home and a mother who is concerned about the safety of her young family. The play also looks at how the residents can make a difference by coming together as a group to tackle their problems.

Evolve Project Officer, Lisa Cover, told us: "These workshops have really grabbed the attention and imagination of local young people and got them talking about important issues. Young people are the future of this area and we want to help them make positive choices and get them involved in their community."

The drama workshops are part of Evolve's wider programme to promote a safer community and to engage with local young people.
